Kanthi is a Javanese word meaning until it becomes, while Arum means fragrant or sweet-smelling.
Together, they form the phrase until it becomes fragrant.
The word Kanthi also closely resembles the pronunciation of kantil (white champaca), one of the highlight notes of Kanthi Arum.
